Baltic Americans Rally in Washington, DC in Support of Georgia

Washington, DC (JBANC) --- Demonstrations in support of Georgia against Russian aggression were attended in Washington, DC
on August 15 and 16 by approximately 500 people, including a large number of Baltic-Americans.

The Estonian American National Council (EANC) released a statement regarding the Russian invasion of Georgia which was read at
a rally in front of the White House on Friday, August 15. Marju Rink-Abel, the President of EANC, read the statement (see below).
A second rally on August 15 was held in front of the Russian Embassy in Washington, DC. Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-MI) spoke at
that protest, lending support to Georgia and mentioning his letter to congressional leadership proposing a "nine point plan to sanction
Russia and strengthen ties to Central and Eastern Europe (CEE)."
Other participants at the protests besides Rink-Abel, who concurrently serves as president of the Joint Baltic American National
Committee, Inc. (JBANC), included Gustavs Plato of the American Latvian Association (ALA), and JBANC, Raits Eglitis of ALA, and JBANC
Managing Director Karl Altau, who read a statement on behalf of the Central and East European Coalition (CEEC) in support of Georgia:

Statement on Russian Invasion of Georgia

The Estonian American National Council is the nationally elected body representing Estonian Americans.  We strongly condemn the Russian invasion of Georgia, and call upon the United States and its allies to take all measures necessary to pull back Russian troops from Georgia. The destruction of Georgian cities, facilities, and homes, and the loss of life must end.

The actions of Russia show its true colors.  It wants to restore its control over the countries on its borders and will use whatever means to do so.  The United States’ reaction to these events is critical to the stability and freedom of all countries formerly under Soviet occupation.  The United States must immediately begin work with Europe and NATO to show Russia that its actions jeopardize its standing and relations in the world of free nations.  The United States must also implement all meaningful sanctions against Russia.  Further, the United States must work with all East and Central European countries to jointly strengthen their ability to maintain their democracies and gains achieved since their independence.

Estonian Americans stand with Georgians in this difficult time!

Estonian President’s Statement to the People of Estonia

Statement of President Ilves to the people of Estonia regarding the situation in Georgia

12.08.2008

Dear Estonian people.
All of us who value democratic values and the ideals of freedom support Georgia today. A democratic European country has fallen victim to aggression.
The world, but especially the European Union and NATO, cannot just remain a bystander in this situation. The events are taking place too close to us and with a people that wishes to tie its future to Europe and European values.
We must use all the possibilities at our disposal to immediately halt the military activity and to prevent continued casualties on Georgia’s territory.
It is for this reason that the leaders of the Baltic countries, Poland and Ukraine have decided to make a joint visit to Georgia’s capital Tbilisi today. Together we will continue our activities in the UN, the European Union, and other international organization in order to find a fast and permanent solution to the conflict. .
The Russian-Georgian war is a touchstone for the European Union for shaping European security policies in the future. Europe must re-evaluate its entire current security and foreign policy and bring it into conformity with the new reality. We must thoroughly rethink what the significantly changed security environment in the vicinity of Europe means for Estonia.
Estonia, as a European Union and NATO member state, is not directly threatened by foreign aggression. Our people should not be afraid or feel endangered.
Estonia’s primary security guarantee is our international credibility, the fulfillment of the obligations we have accepted, as well as our readiness to participate in the resolution of Europe’s and the world’s problems.
In Estonia we must not rush to make decisions that might reduce the defense capabilities of our country or weaken our domestic security. A great responsibility rests with our parliament and government to find sufficient opportunities to strengthen our statehood.
I wish us all the strength and peace of mind to achieve this.

Russia Illegally Deploys New Troops in Abkhazia; Georgia Calls for

Immediate Withdrawal, Condemns Reckless Escalation

In apparent prelude to military action, Russia cites former President Putin’s

widely condemned April 16 decree establishing ties with separatist rebels

Russia today illegally and unilaterally deployed 400 new troops in Georgia’s Abkhazia

region in flagrant violation of international agreements. The move marks another sharp

escalation by Moscow in a conflict that has alarmed the international community. Last

week, the United Nations condemned the recent downing by Russia of a Georgian

aircraft in Georgian airspace.

This is the first explicit action by Russia that invokes former President Putin’s April 16

decree establishing official links with separatist rebels in Georgia. The international

community—including the European Union, the UN, NATO, and the United States—

roundly condemned that decree, and called on Russia to revoke or at least not to

implement it. Today’s new troop deployment also further subverts any remaining

Russian claim to be acting as a mediator in the conflict.

Despite hopes that new Russian President Dmitry Medvedev would seek to calm tensions

with Georgia, this latest action seems to confirm that Moscow will continue with its policy

of annexing Georgian territory. Medvedev is set to meet President Mikheil Saakashvili

on June 7 in St. Petersburg. Saakashvili said on Thursday that Georgia would refrain

from any actions that might be perceived as even remotely provocative in advance of

that meeting.

Russia thinly veiled its actions by saying that they were “in accordance with the Russian

president's decree on humanitarian aid to Abkhazia.” Its defense ministry labeled the

new soldiers “railroad troops,” claiming they would rehabilitate strategic infrastructure in

the separatist-controlled territory. However, there is no means of verifying such a claim,

nor to assess how heavily armed the new troops are. Furthermore, such engineering

troops are not recognized—even by Russia itself—as legitimate peacekeeping forces.

Traditionally, their role is to make technical preparations in advance of military action.

The Foreign Ministry of Georgia strongly protested the deployment, which appears aimed

at preparing military transport routes for an invasion of Georgia. “Nobody needs to bring

railway forces to the territory of another country unless a military intervention is being

prepared,” said Grigol Vashadze, First Deputy Foreign Minister.

Saakashvili has requested an urgent call with Medvedev to discuss Russia’s latest

military move in the Abkhazia region. The Government of Georgia is also briefing senior

officials in Western capitals about today’s developments.

Earlier this week, the UN confirmed that a Russian fighter jet—either a MiG-29 or an SU-

27—was responsible for shooting down an unarmed Georgian drone in Georgia’s airspace

on April 20. Russia has also recently illegally deployed heavy artillery and anti-aircraft

systems, armored vehicles, and hundreds of troops—among them up to 500

paratroopers—in the Abkhazia region.

Paratroopers, whose function is to conduct airborne assaults, are not conventionally

considered to be peacekeeping troops. Russia’s Itar-Tass news agency has quoted a

source in the Russian Air Force as confirming the deployment: “The paratroopers came

to Abkhazia with their submachine guns, machine guns, and grenade launchers. They

also have about 30 airborne combat vehicles, artillery and air defense launchers,

including ZSU-23-2 anti-aircraft systems.”
